Fossil was Wizards of the Coast's third English Pokemon expansion and the last of the 20th century, hitting shelves October 10, 1999. At 62 cards it's the smallest of the classic WotC trio, leaning hard into prehistoric and Ghost-type Pokemon — Aerodactyl, Kabutops, the Omanyte/Kabuto fossil line, plus heavy hitters Dragonite, Lapras and Zapdos. It came in 11-card packs with a holo roughly every third pack, and shipped in both a scarce 1st Edition run and a mass-market Unlimited run; 1st Edition carries the small circled "Edition 1" stamp left of the art window. After Base Set and Jungle it can feel like the overlooked middle child, but the holo roster runs deep and clean copies are getting genuinely hard to source.
- 11st Edition copies carry a small circled 'Edition 1' stamp to the left of the art window; Unlimited has no stamp.
- 2A rare Australian 'third print' variant exists; it looks nearly identical to Unlimited but its booster packaging uses a darker red 'Pokemon' wordmark instead of yellow.
Centering is the usual WotC weak point — 60/40 is common, not a defect. Holos show edge whitening easily against the dark borders; check the back border too. The 1st Edition stamp area is a frequent print-line spot.
