Jungle was the first English Pokemon expansion, and Wizards rushed it out on June 16, 1999 — bumped up from a planned August slot once they learned Topps was moving on Pokemon that summer. They localized Media Factory's 48-card Japanese set but padded the count to 64 by adding non-holo versions of every holo rare, which is why our checklist runs 5/64 Kangaskhan holo right alongside 21/64 Kangaskhan non-holo. The 1st Edition stamp sold through fast; quantities were never published, so it trades on scarcity rather than a known number. The famous wrinkles here are the 'no set symbol' error holos (found in both 1st Edition and Unlimited) and the 1st Edition non-holo Electrode, which mistakenly wears its Base Set artwork. Snorlax, Vaporeon, and the twin Kangaskhans are the cards collectors chase out of this box.
- 1The 'no set symbol' error holos — holo rares printed without the Jungle flower symbol — appear in both 1st Edition and Unlimited and are a recognized, mildly premium variant.
- 2ALL 1st Edition non-holo Electrode (18/64) cards carry the wrong artwork — Base Set Electrode art instead of the new Jungle art.
- 3WotC added non-holo versions of the 16 holo rares, expanding the Japanese 48-card set to 64.
- 4The 1st Edition print run accidentally included the very rare 1st Edition Promo Pikachu (which bears the black-star promo symbol, not the Jungle flower).
Centering runs loose like Base Set — 60/40 shifts on holos are typical. Watch for the 'no set symbol' error holos, which appear in both 1st Edition and Unlimited and are graded as their own variant; record which you have. 1st Edition cards carry the circle-'1' stamp to the left of the art window. Holo print lines and foil-window bleed are common and not damage.
