Gym Heroes kicked off the Gym duology in August 2000, and it's the set where Wizards of the Coast first let you battle as the Gym Leaders themselves — Brock's, Misty's, Lt. Surge's, Erika's, Sabrina's and Blaine's Pokemon, plus a run of Team Rocket cards. At 132 cards it was a big WotC set, sold in 1st Edition packs before the Unlimited print. The headliner is Sabrina's Gengar (14/132), famous as much for its scrubbed artwork — the Japanese graveyard's cross-shaped tombstones were erased for the Western release, leaving a plain background — as for its value. A characterful, story-driven set that still pulls collectors who grew up with the anime's Gym badges.
- 11st Edition stamp is a small black circular '1' below the character box at the lower-left of the art window; Unlimited has no stamp.
- 2Sabrina's Gengar (14/132) had the Japanese cross-shaped tombstones removed for the Western release, leaving a plain background.
- 3First English set to use 'Owner's' Pokemon (e.g. Brock's Onix, Misty's Seadra), tying cards to specific Gym Leaders and Team Rocket.
1st Edition carries a small black circular '1' stamp at the lower-left, just below the character box on the front of the art window; Unlimited has none. The darker holo borders show edge whitening readily and the foil scratches, so clean high-grade copies of the chase holos carry a premium.
