Gym Challenge was the seventh main English expansion Wizards of the Coast shipped, landing October 16, 2000. It's the back half of the two-set Gym lineage, localising Japan's "Challenge from the Darkness," and it leans hard on Gym Leader ownership: nearly every card belongs to a named trainer like Blaine, Koga, Erika, Giovanni, or Team Rocket. The crown jewel is Blaine's Charizard (2/132), the set's marquee holo and the chase that keeps sealed product moving. Rocket's Mewtwo (14/132) and the Giovanni holos round out a deep 132-card checklist split across First Edition and Unlimited, with 16 holographic rares in all. As the final Gym-series set — Neo Genesis took the English line forward from here — it closes out one of the most beloved chapters of the WotC era.
- 11st Edition cards carry the black '1' inside a circle stamped to the left of the art window.
- 2The Gym Challenge symbol (white stage, black tiers) is the color-inverse of Gym Heroes' symbol (black stage, white tiers) — the two sets are distinguishable by symbol, not just checklist.
- 3Some early Blaine's Charizard prints show a Fighting-type energy symbol instead of Fire and 'energy' miswritten with a lowercase 'e'.
- 4Holos use the era-standard cosmos/galaxy foil pattern in the art window.
First Edition is the scarcer, more valuable variant. Watch for the usual WotC-era centering drift and check holo surfaces for print lines and scratching, which depress grades fast on the cosmos foil.
