Known in Japan as Challenge from the Darkness (闇からの挑戦), this is the sixth main expansion of the Media Factory run and the partner to Leaders' Stadium — the two Japanese Gym sets that Wizards later re-cut into English Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge. Released June 25, 1999, it leans into the back-half Kanto leaders — Koga, Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni — capped by Blaine's Charizard (No. 006). A couple of illustrations here were redrawn for the West (Koga's Ninja Trick and Misty's Tears), so the Japanese originals carry art you won't find on the English cards. Single Unlimited print run, no 1st Edition, classic cosmos holo. A staple of any serious vintage Japanese Pokémon shelf.
- 1Two cards had their illustrations redrawn for the censored English release: Koga's Ninja Trick (the original Japanese omote-manji symbol was changed) and Misty's Tears, so the Japanese versions carry the unaltered art.
- 2Card numbering runs as plain No. 001-098 (e.g. Blaine's Charizard is No. 006), not the X/132 fraction used on the English cards.
- 3Shares the Gym-booster set symbol and stadium styling with the partner Japanese set, Leaders' Stadium (Gym 1).
Japanese Gym-era stock tends to take an edge well, with cleaner borders and tighter centering than the later English run. Holos use the classic cosmos/galaxy foil that shows hairline scratches under angled light, so inspect the holo window before grading. No 1st Edition stamp exists for this set; all copies are Unlimited.
